Here in the northern hemisphere, autumn has arrived for sure. Still, three makers from Germany decided it was Tulip Season. Adina, Franka and Irina arranged a private sew-a-long and made the Tulip range of our patterns, the Tulip Skirt and the Tulip Dress.
What is a Sew-a-long?
A sew-a-long is simply a number of makers deciding to make a pattern at the same time – helping and cheering each other along the way, if needed. Often the event has a handle on Instagram/Facebook so that they can follow and interact with each other, but it can also be just two friends or community members deciding to do something together.
The Tulip Girls’ Sew-a-long
We asked them to share their experience – as well as their makes.
Irina @sewpercalifragilistic:
“What I love about our group is that we always have a partner in crime to back up when one is lost.
The girls never fail to provide good advice, a caring word and a bad joke!
Besides practical sewing tips we can be sure to really receive honest feedback when it comes to fitting issues. Just like in life 1.0 you‘re lucky to have a friend who does not only tell what you want to hear.
We‘re coming from three very different regions in Germany, each with well known clichés for people’s characters. But only the best of them are true, it’s always a blast!I personally would recommend doing a muslin only of the fitted bodice without arms.
I’d point out that due to the skirt construction alterations in bodice width are not simply done with taking in the side seams at the end.”
Adina @adinskausminsk:
“I couldn’t agree more with Irina!
As for the pattern: I think it is easy to sew. I followed the instructions exactly, i had no problems. The sizes fit perfectly. When choosing fabric, it is important to know how the look should look later. If you take viscose, the skirt looks soft, if you take cotton, the skirt gets a certain stand like a petticoat.”
Franka @goldilocksandthewildones
“I can only agree with Irina and Adina!
It’s so much fun to sew with these two wonderful women and there is always something to talk or laugh about as we don’t take ourselves too seriously . For my skirt I used a fabric without too much drape, so I slightly straightened the curves at the front and side, apart from that I didn’t do any modifications.
I chose the size according to my waist and it fits perfectly.”
