After decades of skinny jeans, the wide leg trousers are back in fashion. Our new high-waisted trousers sewing pattern features a superior fit that is flattering for many different body types.
So stop worrying about whether the look suits your body shape and instead start exploring all the fun ways you can make and style the wide legged look.
The art of layering
A new and modern way to style wide trousers is to layer them under a long shirt. Combine our high-waisted trousers pattern with a lengthened version of our oversized shirt pattern. In the image below, we’ve used one of the collars from the collar extension pack Furthermore, the extension is also working for the cap sleeve shirt pattern!
To vary the look, make the oversized shirt in its original length and pair with the trousers pattern made as long shorts.
A cool way to transform the trousers is to shorten them to ankle length and use a fabric with less flow, like medium- to heavyweight linen or crisp poplin for a more artsy look.

The perfect summer outfit
Combine the cap sleeve shirt pattern or the top from the free pyjamas pattern with the high-waisted trousers to get a dressy but comfortable look for warmer days. Or, do a French tuck (tucked in only at the front) to get a more casual look.
The magic of fabric never ceases to amaze us. Use lightweight and flowy fabrics, such as viscose-twill or tencel, to make the wide-legged style a summer style.
Why not use the same fabric for both shirt/top and trousers to create cool co-ords? With the top tucked in you suddenly have a faux jumpsuit.

From work to after work
The high-waisted trousers, shortened to culottes or shorts can be worn instead of a skirt. Make them in lightweight wool and combine with a pair of brogues and a turtleneck and you’re all set for the office.
Switch to heels and red lips and you are ready for after work. Likewise, for full-length trousers switch to a cami or tie bow shirt in silk or viscose and you are ready for anything!

Easy breezy jumpsuit
Our new wide-leg jumpsuit pattern is easy and quick to make and easy to wear – just pull on and go! This pattern can easily be transformed with different leg lengths and fabrics.
Wear it instead of a cocktail dress during the colder month – or layer it with a thin wool turtleneck.
Hi Anki, If I have the measurements of: seat (excl pleats) of 109cm and waist measurement of 94cm. What size should I cut out for the High Waisted Trousers?
Hi Didge, if your waist is 94 cm I would go for L and make the outer back dart smaller.
If totally skipping the outer darts you add 5 cm to the waist measurement, but recommended ease at the waist is approx 3 cm so making them smaller gives you a slightly better fit.
Please keep in mind that these are high waisted so you measure yourself in your actual waist, above the navel.
Best, Anki
